Dr. Ele Ferrannini is an internationally recognized physician-scientist specializing in diabetes, metabolism, and cardiovascular disease. He is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Pisa, an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center, and a Senior Research Associate at the National Research Council’s Institute of Clinical Physiology.
A pioneer in diabetes research, Dr. Ferrannini has made significant contributions to the understanding of insulin resistance, β-cell function, the incretin effect, and the cardiovascular complications of diabetes. His work has also advanced therapeutic strategies, including DPP-4 and SGLT2 inhibitors and the metabolic effects of bariatric surgery.
In recognition of his impact, Dr. Ferrannini received the American Diabetes Association’s 2020 Banting Medal for Scientific Achievement, one of the highest honours in the field. He has also been named a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate™ for his significant influence on diabetes and metabolic research.
